A great Halloween playlist walks a line. Lean too hard on the novelty stuff and the dance floor empties after "Monster Mash." Skip the spooky classics and it just feels like a regular party with cobwebs on the wall. The trick is mixing the theatrical Halloween anthems everyone expects with songs that actually keep people dancing, and knowing when to play which.

I run Halloween events all over Sarasota and Siesta Key, and this is the set I build from. It pairs the iconic spooky tracks with the modern dance hits that fill a floor, so the night feels like Halloween and a real party at the same time.

What I changed, and why
Added current dance-floor pop. The original list had only one modern track, and a Halloween crowd these days spans a lot of ages and tastes. "Heads Will Roll" (the spooky-but-irresistible Yeah Yeah Yeahs track that's a staple of every Halloween playlist now) and Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy" pull in the younger guests and keep the floor full between the classics.

Swapped the "This Is Halloween" version. I'd go with the original Nightmare Before Christmas version over the Marilyn Manson cover. It's the one people know, it's more crowd-friendly, and it works for a wider age range if there are any kids or families in the mix.

Moved a couple of deeper cuts. "Evil Woman" (ELO) and "Ghost Town" (The Specials) are good but they don't move a floor the way the others do, so I'd hold them as connective tissue rather than centerpieces. Easy to keep in if the vibe calls for it.

Where my setup actually matters
This is the one event where the lights and fog aren't just extras, they're part of the show. A Halloween party lives and dies on atmosphere, and that's exactly what a full DJ rig brings that a phone and a speaker can't.

Fog and lighting set the mood. The fog machine and color-wash lighting turn a regular room into something that actually feels like Halloween. I time the heavier effects to the big moments, like dropping fog and going dark-and-red right as "Thriller" hits.

I program the night in waves. I don't front-load all the novelty songs. I space the "Monster Mash" and "Time Warp" moments through the night so they stay fun, and keep the modern dance tracks running underneath to hold the floor.

Costume contest and announcements covered. I bring a wireless mic, so if you're running a costume contest or any other moment, I'll handle the music cues and the announcements so it flows.

I'll match the crowd. An adults-only Halloween bash and a family-friendly costume party need different sets. Tell me who's coming and I'll steer the spooky-to-danceable balance accordingly.
